GTA V remains the clearest reference point for measuring GTA 6’s next step.

Map Size: Roughly Double

According to statements from Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, made in interviews accompanying Rockstar-hosted preview events after the August 2026 Extended Look, GTA 6's full map (Leonida) is roughly twice the size of GTA 5's complete map, and Vice City alone is roughly twice the size of GTA 5's Los Santos. Vice City combined with its surrounding suburbs is described as around 11 times larger than the equivalent built-up area in GTA 5. These are developer-stated comparisons rather than a formal spec sheet, so treat the multipliers as approximate.

Protagonists: Three Down to Two, But More Connected

GTA 5's biggest structural innovation was letting players switch between three unrelated protagonists, Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, each with a separate arc that occasionally intersected. GTA 6 narrows this to two protagonists, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, but builds their relationship as the story's central thread from the start rather than three separate character studies. You can still switch between them in solo play.

Platforms: A Narrower Launch Window (For Now)

GTA 5 eventually released across seven platform generations, from PS3/Xbox 360 all the way to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. GTA 6 is launching on just two platforms, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC date confirmed yet. This isn't unusual for a Rockstar launch; GTA 5's PC version arrived roughly 18 months after the console release, so a similar pattern for GTA 6 wouldn't be surprising, but it isn't official.

Setting Tone: Modern San Andreas vs. Modern Vice City

GTA 5 built a satirical modern-day version of Southern California. GTA 6 returns to Rockstar's most beloved single setting, Vice City, but rebuilt as a modern, expanded version rather than a retro 1980s throwback, set within the larger fictional state of Leonida. If you want the deeper history behind why Vice City carries so much weight for the series, see our [history of GTA piece].

Development Time: The Longest Gap in Series History

Thirteen years separates GTA 5 and GTA 6, longer than the gap between any two previous mainline entries (GTA IV to GTA V was about five years). Some of that gap reflects GTA Online's unprecedented decade-long life extending GTA 5's active support well past a typical game's shelf life, and some reflects GTA 6's own two delays (first to May 2026, then to November 2026) as Rockstar cited the need for additional polish.

So, Is GTA 6 Just "Bigger GTA 5"?

Not quite. The core loop, open-world crime, story missions, side content, a living city, carries over, and that's by design; it's the formula the series is built on. What's changed is scale (a larger, more varied map), structure (two connected leads instead of three separate ones), and setting (Vice City's return instead of San Andreas). Whether that adds up to a bigger leap than GTA IV-to-V remains to be seen until the game is actually in players' hands on November 19.
