Rankings like this are always partly taste, but they don't have to be pure opinion. This list weighs critical reception, commercial performance, and lasting influence on the series, and it's limited to the five mainline 3D-era entries most players actually compare: GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, GTA IV, and GTA V. GTA 6 isn't ranked yet, for an obvious reason: it hasn't released. We'll update this once it has.
Quick Answer
| Rank | Game | Year | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Grand Theft Auto V | 2013 | Best-selling, three-protagonist structure, a decade of live-service staying power via GTA Online |
| 2 | Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas | 2004 | Most ambitious scope of its era, three cities, RPG systems, still widely replayed |
| 3 | Grand Theft Auto: Vice City | 2002 | Iconic setting and soundtrack, defined the series' visual identity |
| 4 | Grand Theft Auto III | 2001 | Foundational, created the modern GTA formula in 3D |
| 5 | Grand Theft Auto IV | 2008 | Divisive at launch over tone and physics, but hugely influential on Rockstar's later cinematic direction |
1. Grand Theft Auto V (2013)
GTA V remains one of the best-selling entertainment products in history, and its three-protagonist structure (Michael, Franklin, Trevor) was a genuine structural first for the series. GTA Online's decade-plus of continued support has kept the game commercially and culturally relevant longer than any other entry, a big part of why it tops this list.
2. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004)
San Andreas took the biggest scope swing of its era: three full cities (Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas) inside one state, plus RPG systems like character stats, customization, and property. It's still one of the most replayed entries in the series two decades later, and its ambition is the clearest direct precedent for GTA 6's own state-sized map.
3. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002)
Vice City's 1986 Miami-inspired setting, synth-driven soundtrack, and Tommy Vercetti's rise-to-power story gave the series its most iconic single aesthetic identity. It's also, not coincidentally, the setting Rockstar chose to return to for GTA 6, a strong argument for how much cultural weight it still carries.
4. Grand Theft Auto III (2001)
GTA III doesn't rank higher today mostly because of age, its systems are foundational rather than refined. But it's the game that created the 3D open-world crime-game template the entire rest of this list (and GTA 6) is still built on. Historically, it's arguably the single most important entry in the series.
5. Grand Theft Auto IV (2008)
GTA IV is the most divisive entry here. Its pivot toward physics realism and a darker, more grounded Niko Bellic story split opinion at launch, some players found the driving and combat frustratingly heavy compared to San Andreas, while others praised its tonal maturity. It ranks last on this list specifically because of that launch divisiveness, not because it lacks influence, GTA IV's character-first storytelling directly shaped the tone Rockstar has carried into GTA V and now GTA 6.
Where Will GTA 6 Land?
We're not going to guess. This list will be updated with GTA 6 once it's actually released and reviewed on November 19, 2026, ranking it now, based on trailers and previews alone, wouldn't be an honest tier list.
